EVTOL MEGAWATT CHARGING CONNECTING CITIES BY SMART VERTIPORTS
EVTOL MEGAWATT CHARGING CONNECTING CITIES BY SMART VERTIPORTS
EVTOL MEGAWATT CHARGING CONNECTING CITIES BY SMART VERTIPORTS
Date of Session: 4 February 2021
eVTOL is poised to take off – but is the necessary infrastructure in place? Electric flying requires significant energy requirements and charging infrastructure, and utilities need to get on board as a lack of planning could end up grounding this promising technology and the growth opportunities it presents. Using a single charging standard for the eVTOL community will allow for the building & sharing of charging infrastructure on a regional and global scale.
This webinar will introduce the international standard charging communication protocol ISO15118 and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), and discuss the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of a standardised charging solution for the eVTOL industry.

JOINTLY PRESENTED BY CHARIN AND ROTORCRAFT ASIA AND UNMANNED SYSTEMS ASIACharIN is the association representing the international charging standard CCS and using the ISO 15118 communication protocol originally designed for electric vehicles. This standard has been accepted in many industries from forklifts to eVTOLs and ferries. The latest charging system MCS (Megawatt Charging System) allows for charging of 4.5MW. This charging protocol also uses the ISO 15118 standard and allows for international roaming during charging sessions in different Vertiports, fast and automated charging while making secured payments without human interaction. Where needed, it also provides demand/response tools to shave off peak loads by grid or DS operators. From our experience in the EV industry we came to the conclusion that only if one High Power charging standard is adopted, will worldwide investment in regional & global charging infrastructure happen in earnest. This is key for the e-VTOL, e-plane industry to take off.
